Job Description

An industry-leading tech company

At Zendesk, we geek out about building software that delivers the ultimate customer experience. Your favorite brands (like AirBnb, Uber, Slack, and OpenTable) leverage our products to engage you as a customer, and we lead the industry with beautifully simple software. And we’re constantly innovating - no really, we can’t wait to outdo ourselves in the near future!
Zendesk has all the stuff you’d expect from a tech company - competitive pay, stock, benefits, beautiful office, snacks, and more. We also have a culture deeply dedicated to helping engineers keep work-life balance, from flexible hours and remote work, to a very generous parental leave policy. Our Corporate Social Responsibility team is actively engaged in our community and enables us to invest thousands of hours with local community groups each year. We invest in diversity and inclusion so that our engineers reflect the diversity of the world around us. We have a whole crew dedicated to ensuring our workplace experience is top notch and welcoming for all.

A supportive team

At Zendesk we value diversity of opinions and experience, and cultivate a culture of openness and transparency. We love teams of great collaborators who support each other and believe in an atmosphere of openness and inclusion.
Your team lead, Seth, will be there to provide guidance, feedback, and support. He knows that engineers are best positioned to make the right decisions and wants you to have the autonomy to succeed and grow in your role at Zendesk.

What you’ll do

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Interface team, you will be a key technical player designing and building the next generation of Zendesk’s engineering platform. You will design and build critical tools and infrastructure to help engineers work more efficiently and effectively, enabling Zendesk teams to ship great products faster. You’ll help identify gaps in our engineering practices and build solutions to increase our reliability and speed.
You will be working across organizational boundaries, with product teams and infrastructure teams, to develop a cohesive experience for our engineers. You’ll also be an advocate and expert on our products, helping engineers at Zendesk get the most out of what we have to offer.
Zendesk engineering is growing fast and you will be a key contributor to enabling that by allowing teams to ramp up faster and start making an impact on day 1.

What you need to succeed

If you’re good at these things you’re well on your way to becoming a great Zengineer:
  • Problem solving
  • Mentoring and teaching other engineers
  • Communication
  • Collaboration
  • Comfortable jumping into a new language or stack

Some other things that would help you in you role (but certainly not required)
  • Experience with multiple programming languages (Go, Java, Ruby, Scala)
  • Familiarity with container orchestration tools (e.g. Kubernetes)
  • Familiarity with continuous integration and delivery systems (Travis, GitHub Actions, Spinnaker, etc)

That said, if your experience looks a little different from what we’ve identified and you think you can rock the role, we’d love to learn more about you.
